Product Focus - Pilates Reformers

The Reformer has quickly become a fixture in Pilates studios and gyms as well as in places like rehabilitation clinics. Its sliding carriage and sophisticated system of springs, straps and pulleys makes it an excellent starting piece for beginners or anyone with rehab issues, says Ramona Bianco, co-owner of Fitness Fusion in Richmond, B.C. “But it’s also versatile enough to challenge people with years of experience.”

If you’re shopping for Reformers for your facility, buy a brand name and buy close to home if possible, advises Bianco. While she’s extremely happy with her four Reformers, she’s aware of flimsy bargain-priced models on the market. “It’s impossible to get good results if you don’t have good quality equipment,” she says. By buying from a nearby supplier, she saved a substantial amount in shipping fees and also helped the local economy.

Bianco also likes knowing that parts and repair help are available locally. But repairs have never been an issue – she’s only ever had ball bearings adjusted on her four-year-old machines. Because they’re powered by humans and not electricity, they don’t break down often,” she says.

Here are some points to consider if you’re in the market for Reformers.

- Be sure the carriage glides smoothly and easily.

- Look for springs with just the right tension – not too tight or too slack

- Choose a brand with moderately firm padding that offers comfortable support without letting the body sink in too much.

- Check that the equipment isn’t too low to the ground. This makes it difficult for rehab clients to easily climb onto and is hard on trainers’ backs.

- Consider the affect of aesthetics on your clients. Frames can be metal or wood and upholstery comes in a wide variety of colours.
