Active Aging Week caps September with opportunities for older adults
| What’s the secret to staying healthy and enjoying all the years of your life? For most people, the key is living an active life. There will be plenty of opportunities for older adults to find activities that benefit their health and well-being during Active Aging Week, September 24 to October 1 (International Day of Older Persons). | ![]() |
Seniors centres, retirement communities, health clubs, parks and recreation departments and aging services providers will host a variety of free activities, including group walks (both strolls and faster paced), exercise classes, dances, health lectures and demonstrations, and previews of upcoming activities, such as a class on preventing falls.
Find a list of locations where Active Aging Week events are taking place by visiting the consumer section of the International Council on Active Aging by web site at www.icaa.cc/aaw.htm. In your community, look for announcements, posters and fliers about the week’s events.
Active Aging Week presentations are a great way to learn something new, meet people, spend time with friends and find out what’s available in the community. Everything is free, and the emphasis is on fun and education.
Star Trac Helps in Obesity Fight
Irvine, CA – Star Trac is actively fighting childhood obesity by donating commercial fitness equipment to the University of Southern California’s SANO LA (Strength and Nutrition Outcomes in Los Angeles) study and RDF USA’s “Shaq’s Big Challenge” reality television show which aired in June and July.
The SANO LA study is designed to spark a new attitude among minority youth and their families toward health through exercise and nutritional education while reducing the effects of obesity-related illness. SANO LA hopes to prove that a change in lifestyle can help combat the ever-increasing prevalence of Type II Diabetes and other obesity-related illnesses.
Star Trac also donated cardiovascular equipment for Shaq’s Big Challenge, a reality series spotlighting the youth obesity epidemic in the United States. Each child in the show also received a Star Trac Pro Series stepper for use in their homes.
