Manitoba Bans Trans Fats in Schools
WINNIPEG – The Canadian Press reports that Manitoba’s NDP government is planning to ban high-fat foods in schools and harmful phosphates in rivers and lakes.
The government’s annual throne speech outlined plans that include a ban on the sale of foods containing trans fats at schools across the province. There were hints that the crackdown may be expanded to other junk food. Trans fats, are produced when hydrogen is added to vegetable oil to increase its shelf life.
They are considered the worst kind of fat because they raise “bad'’ cholesterol levels and lower “good'’ cholesterol levels, significantly increasing the risk of heart disease. The government is also planning to forbid the sale of dishwasher detergents and lawn fertilizers that contain phosphates.
