National Do-Not-Call List Launches September 2008
OTTAWA – The new National Do Not Call List (DNCL) will be launched on September 30th, 2008, establishing a nation-wide registry to reduce the number of unsolicited telemarketing calls made to potential consumers. Fitness Industry Canada (FIC) believes that the registry will likely have little affect on the fitness industry, providing clubs havae an existing relationship with members. With an existing member, fitness providers are welcome to call, or have a telemarketing company call on its behalf.
Clubs that call prospects from guest registries or lead boxes will likely need to adjust their operating polices to comply with the new legislation. In the United States a number of clubs have added the following wording to guest registries: “Signing this register is deemed written permission and consent for future telephone or email contact by (CLUB NAME) for solicitation purposes regardless of whether or not I am listed on any “Do Not Call List Registry.” For more information on the NDNCL, please visit www.crtc.gc.ca.
The newest development concerns the issuing of a Request for Proposals by the CRTC to find a contractor to carry out investigations on all telemarketing complaints. The selected bidder will also monitor compliance with the telemarketing rules and with the National Do Not Call List.
Some of the requirements the contractor must meet are:
• Provide a company profile describing its relevant knowledge and experience.
• Possess a qualified management team capable of developing and implementing investigation and compliance services regarding telemarketing complaints for the duration of the contract.
• Demonstrate to the CRTC the absence of a conflict of interest.
A bidder’s conference will be held on February 28, 2008 to provide answers to questions from prospective bidders regarding the Request for Proposal. For more information visit www.merx.com.
