Alberta Politician Proposes Exercise Reward
| CALGARY- Calgary-Lougheed MLA Dave Rodney has introduced a private member’s bill that would offer tax relief for annual fees of up to $1,500 per person for Alberta residents. | ![]() |
Rodney, who has twice climbed Mount Everest, said his proposal would encourage people to be more active and save Alberta’s medical system money.
The federal government introduced a $500 fitness tax credit for children in 2007, but Rodney wants Alberta’s version to include adults as well.
“If they are disciplined enough to take the time to workout, then we should reward them,'’ said Rodney.
A recent study done for the Fitness Industry Council of Canada, which is lobbying Ottawa to expand its fitness credit, suggests tax relief for people of every age would reduce health-care costs and save the federal government $2.5 billion over the next 21 years.
