Canadian Wins IHRSA Merit Scholarship

BOSTON – The International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) announced that Michael McDonald, Regional Fitness Director of World Health Club -Calgary, is the recipient of the 3rd Annual John McCarthy Merit Scholarship. Established in 2006 through donations from industry founders and friends, the annual scholarship provides full tuition and a $500 travel stipend to IHRSA’s Institute for Professional Club Management.

“Reading Michael’s application and the in-depth comments of his references is again another illustration of how sophisticated and professional leaders in the health club industry such as Michael are becoming,” said Roger Ralph of the scholarship selection committee and Hockessin Athletic Club. “It is not just that Michael is passionate about what he does or his love of the industry. He has clearly committed himself on course of getting better and better and leading his colleagues in the same direction,” said Ralph.

Selected from a group of 10 applicants, McDonald has served as the Regional Fitness Director of World Health Club-Calgary since March of 2008, and as Fitness Manager at three additional World Health Club (WHC) locations. In addition to his leadership within his health club, McDonald is actively involved in community work, creating the WHC Toy Drive for the Calgary Women’s Shelter and organizing the WHC Charity Golf Tournament to benefit the Canadian Diabetes Association. He also serves as Chairperson of the Mt. Royal College Personal Fitness Trainer Advisory Board and is co-creator of the World Health Club Medical Advisory Board.

Applications for the scholarship were evaluated by a committee of five industry professionals: Rick Caro of Management Vision, Jarod Cogswell of ClubSport Oregon, Brent Darden of TELOS Fitness Center, Roger Ralph of Hockessin Athletic Club, and Karen Wischmann of Total Woman Gym & Day Spa.
