The Hiring Game: What about candidates going through major life changes?
By Brenda Abdilla
| What if the job candidate you like best lived in another province and would need to relocate to work for you? Or, what if the job was a dramatic change for the candidate, like going from law to club management?
First of all, it is important to remember that oftentimes new jobs go hand in hand with life changes. The question is whether or not this particular life transition for this particular candidate will work for this job opening. |

On one hand, people in transition can bring a certain zeal and enthusiasm to the job that “regular” candidates might not possess. Your company could be the benefactor of a clarity and focus that come with the desire to start a new life.
On the other hand, if the candidate cancels the moving truck at the last minute or takes a job in his or her former industry two weeks after starting with your company, you will have wasted weeks or months of time and resources.
The best solution is to put the onus on the candidate to prove to you that the timing is perfect. Ask for a business plan, a moving plan and/or have the candidate do some research that will make you feel more certain about your decision. Then, wait and see what happens.
