Evaluating Job Candidates’ Ability to Handle Adversity

By Brenda Abdilla

Here are some key indicators to help evaluate potential employees’ coping abilities:

Ability to Discern Their Audience
Today’s economic stress makes some people feel they can complain freely to anyone. Good candidates, however, know how to focus a conversation and take it into a positive direction.

Ability to Recover from Failure
During interviews pay close attention to candidates’ perspective on past failures. Do they blame them on others? Do they claim to have been a victim? Or can they accept at least part of the blame?

Ability to Endure Stress
Many job candidates have been laid off from their previous positions. While this is unfortunate, it is also a good opportunity to probe their attitudes about the job loss. Unexpected changes, bad news and stressful events are part of life and business. Hire people who have solid and successful experience coping with negative issues.
