Time for a Reality Check with Employees?

Parenting experts often encourage parents to be truthful with their kids. Children with wild imaginations tend to make up worse-than-reality outcomes from bits and pieces of information that they overhear.
Employees can be like this, too. Between the daily dose of negative business news in the media and the trusty grapevine, workplace speculation can unnecessarily derail your company’s productivity. |
If business is down, it’s usually a good idea to share this information with your employees. But also tell them your plans to remedy the situation and the adjustments that will be needed going forward – even if drastic measures must be taken. Be clear about what information they are free to share with others and what is confidential and should be kept within the company. Chances are they already know or suspect what’s going on, so the reality-check conversation might actually provide relief and help them to focus on being part of the solution.
